John faithfully answered every call placed before him.

John Thomas Odom, affectionately known as “Rat,” lived a life rooted in faith and expressed through love, service, and devotion to his family. He trusted in the faithfulness of God and demonstrated that trust through the way he lived each day—with humility, perseverance, generosity, and compassion. Whether serving in the church, providing for his family, helping a neighbor, or offering strength to someone in need, John faithfully answered every call placed before him. His life was a quiet yet powerful testimony of what it means to walk with God and serve others with a willing heart.

Born on September 9, 1942, to the late Jessie Mae Odom in Barnwell, South Carolina, John was baptized at a young age and became a member of Jordan Baptist Church of Barnwell as well as a member of the St. John Society. He faithfully served on the usher board until he was called home by the Lord.

John worked for Rheem Manufacturing, later known as Dixie Narco, until his retirement. He was a hardworking and versatile man who was well known for his skills in butchering, hunting, and fishing. He also worked in lawn care and handyman maintenance. Whatever task was placed before him, John was willing to lend his hands and his heart to get the job done.

On June 23, 1961, John was united in marriage to Ethel Mae Odom. Together, they shared a loving and fruitful union of 65 years. John was a devoted husband, provider, and protector. He was the kind of man who did not hesitate to be the “village” so many people needed. His generosity, strength, wisdom, and willingness to help others became an important part of the legacy he leaves behind.

In addition to his mother, Jessie Mae Odom, John was preceded in death by his brother, Willis Odom; sister, Melease Rollins; brother, Aaron Odom Sr.; and son, James Ronald Odom.

John leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy his loving wife, Ethel Mae Odom; two loving daughters, Diane (Allah) Rosan of Coral Springs, Florida, and Sherita (George) Worthen of Louisville, Georgia; one son, Victor Worthy of Barnwell, South Carolina; and one daughter-in-love, Mary Odom of St. Matthews, Georgia.

He is also survived by three sisters-in-love, Linda Odom, Helen Jones, and Lovette (Tommie) Love; five grandchildren, Anisha Rosan and Desmond Rosan, both of Coral Springs, Florida; Eboni Odom of St. Matthews, South Carolina; Sevon (Brittany) Baxley of Port Wentworth, Georgia; and Caitlyn Odom of Louisville, Georgia; four great-grandchildren, Kayden Williams, Darius Dash, Daveah Dash, and Nylah Oliver, all of St. Matthews, South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family members, and friends.

John’s life was a testimony to God’s faithfulness and to the enduring power of love expressed through service. He gave of himself freely, carried burdens without seeking recognition, and made room in his heart and home for those who needed him. Though his hands are now at rest, the work of his heart continues through his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and all who were blessed by his kindness. His legacy is found not only in the memories he leaves behind, but also in the faith, strength, compassion, and love he planted in the lives of others. We grieve his absence, but we rejoice in the assurance that he has answered God’s call, completed his earthly journey, and entered into his eternal reward.

Well done, good and faithful servant.
